What’s on Display?
The gallery’s collection is impressive and diverse. It holds more than 1,500 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, prints, and more. Visitors can see pieces by well-known artists like Richard Artschwager, Fernando Botero, Alex Katz, Malcolm Morley, Carlos Rolón, and Terry Winters. There’s also a strong showing from Detroit artists such as Michael Luchs, Gordon Newton, Robert Sestok, and Gilda Snowden.
For those interested in prints and drawings, the gallery features a significant collection donated by Carl F. Barnes Jr. and Anna M. Barnes. This includes works by William Blake, Eugène Delacroix, Albrecht Dürer, William Hogarth, John Sloan, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. The Tagore Collection brings in calligraphy, rubbings, and scrolls from artists like Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian, Li Keran, and Qigong.
There’s even a selection of African art, thanks to a donation from former Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams, with objects from Nigeria, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Benin.
Always Something New
The gallery doesn’t just keep to its permanent collection. Each year, it hosts at least five exhibitions. These range from contemporary group shows to solo exhibitions and historical retrospectives. Every exhibition is paired with a well-made catalogue, so visitors can take a piece of the experience home.
Right now, visitors can experience “Nightshade: The World in the Evening,” a group show exploring the beauty and emotion of twilight and darkness. Eighteen international painters are included, with styles ranging from realistic to abstract. The exhibition invites visitors to see how artists interpret the shift from day to night and the feelings that come with it.
Coming up soon is the Senior Thesis Exhibition for Winter 2025. This show highlights the work of graduating students from Oakland University’s Department of Art, Art History, and Design. It’s a chance to see fresh ideas and bold creativity from the next generation of artists. The opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2025, from 5–7 PM, and the exhibition will be on view through May 11, 2025.
